Experiences
Professional game
Supporting players in the professional game with the specific psychological pressures of performance scrutiny, media attention, and the demands of a full-time football environment.
Non-league football
Working with non-league players who balance football with work and family commitments, helping them perform consistently and get the most from their ability.
Young professional players
Helping young players build the foundations for a long career — managing setbacks, developing confidence, and learning to perform under pressure from an early age.
Senior professional players
Supporting experienced players through the later stages of their career, including managing transitions and planning for life after football.
Approach to Performance Psychology
Dr Alan Tonge's approach is evidence-based and player-centred. Sessions are not generic — they are built around the individual player, their position, their club environment, and the specific challenges they are facing. The work draws on established psychological frameworks and is adapted to the language and culture of football.
All sessions are strictly confidential. Players can speak openly about their experiences without concern that information will be shared with coaches, clubs, or anyone else. This confidentiality is fundamental to my work. I provide a specialised, psychologically informed bridge which focuses on identity development and personal growth and sits between traditional mental skills training and clinical mental health or medical referrals.
The goal is always about personal growth and development — not abstract concepts, but real changes in how a player thinks, prepares, and performs on the pitch.
